Animals in Lebanon

When we think of animals, we usually think of vertebrates; mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. In fact they make up only about 5% of animal species. The vast majority of animals are invertebrates, and of them, about ¾ are insects. In terms of sheer numbers insects dominate biodiversity in Lebanon – and perform vital functions in the eco systems. They are the most important link in the food web between plants and other animals, the garbage collectors, pollinators and much much more.
But Lebanon does not only have a rich insect fauna, there is also a surprising number of mammal species (including large predators such as the Hyena) birds (it is on one of the world’s most important bird migration highways), amphibians, reptiles and fish.
